Aluminium Flat Bar

Aluminium flat bar — also referred to as aluminium flat strip, aluminium bar stock, or aluminium flat section — is a simple rectangular-section extrusion with a flat face and consistent thickness throughout. Its versatility means it is used across a very wide range of applications: covering and capping exposed edges on boards, panels, and sheet material; reinforcing lightweight structures; forming cover strips, fixing plates, and brackets in fabricated assemblies; creating decorative banding and trim details on furniture, joinery, and interior fit-out; acting as a spacer, shim, or packer in mechanical and other contexts; and as general-purpose bar stock for cutting, drilling, and machining to custom components. The combination of light weight, corrosion resistance, and workability makes it a go-to material for trade fabricators, joiners, and shop-fitters.

Gooding Aluminium stocks aluminium flat bar, all at a consistent 3.2mm thickness: GA 0101 (9.5mm), GA 0103 (12.7mm), GA 0108 (15.8mm), GA 0114 (19.0mm), GA 0124 (25.4mm), GA 0132 (31.7mm), (GA 0141 38.1mm) GA 0157 (50.8mm), GA 0191 (76.2mm), and GA 0178 (101.6mm). This selection spans from narrow 9.5mm strip through to a broad 101.6mm bar, covering the most commonly specified widths for covering, reinforcing, and decorative trim applications.

All flat bar sizes in this range share a uniform wall thickness of 3.2mm. This is a standard thickness for general-purpose extruded flat bar — substantial enough to provide good rigidity and resistance to bending along the flat face, while remaining lightweight and easy to cut, drill, and work. All flat bar is extruded in grade 6063 aluminium alloy, to specifications BS EN 755, BS EN 515, and BS EN 573. Grade 6063 is the standard alloy for extruded profiles, combining a good surface finish with strong corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, and reliable suitability for anodising. It performs well in both interior and exterior environments and is straightforward to fabricate using standard metalworking methods.

Yes. All flat bar sizes are available in either mill (untreated) finish or natural anodised finish. Natural anodised flat bar carries the 'S' suffix on its product code. Anodising is carried out to BS EN ISO 7599 and produces a hard, uniform surface that is more resistant to marking and corrosion than mill finish. Please note that shade variation can occur between anodised batches, and jig or clamp marks up to 50mm from each end are normal on anodised items and should be cut away before fixing where appearance is important.

Mill finish (untreated) is the better choice when the flat bar will be welded, painted, or powder coated as part of the finished assembly, or when it will be concealed from view entirely. Natural anodised finish is the right choice when the flat bar will be visible in the final installation and a clean, consistent aluminium appearance is required — for example as a decorative cover strip, exposed trim, or facing element in joinery and interior fit-out work.

Powder coating to any colour within the Classic RAL Colour Management System is also available on request for mill finish items.

Yes. Grade 6063 aluminium has excellent weldability and is compatible with standard MIG and TIG welding processes, making it well suited for use in fabricated welded assemblies. If sections are to be anodised after welding, consult your anodising supplier in advance as weld zones may react differently to the surrounding parent material.

Yes. Grade 6063 aluminium has good natural corrosion resistance and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. For external applications where long-term surface appearance matters, natural anodised finish provides better protection than mill finish. Powder coating is also available for enhanced weather resistance or specific colour requirements.
