Our aluminium flat bar — also known as aluminium flat strip, aluminium bar stock, or aluminium flat section — is precision-extruded in grade 6063 alloy and stocked in widths from 9.5mm through to 101.6mm, all at a consistent 3.2mm thickness. This is one of the most widely used and versatile profiles in the extrusion range, equally at home as a cover strip, edge cap, reinforcing bar, fixing plate, decorative trim, or general-purpose fabrication material. Whether you need a narrow 9.5mm flat bar for fine edging and joinery detail, a mid-range 25.4mm or 31.7mm strip for structural covering and facing work, or a broad 76.2mm or 101.6mm bar for heavy covering and fabrication applications, Gooding Aluminium holds a stock in both mill (untreated) and natural anodised finish. All sizes are stocked in standard 4-metre lengths with next-day UK dispatch and a cutting service available on request.
Find the right width for your application. With sizes spanning 9.5mm to 101.6mm at a uniform 3.2mm thickness, this range covers the most commonly needed flat bar dimensions for covering, reinforcing, trimming, and general fabrication. Below are answers to common questions about our aluminium flat bar, including sizes, thickness, alloy grade, surface finishes, cutting services, and delivery — to help you select the right size and order with confidence.
Aluminium flat bar — also referred to as aluminium flat strip, aluminium bar stock, or aluminium flat section — is a simple rectangular-section extrusion with a flat face and consistent thickness throughout. Its versatility means it is used across a very wide range of applications: covering and capping exposed edges on boards, panels, and sheet material; reinforcing lightweight structures; forming cover strips, fixing plates, and brackets in fabricated assemblies; creating decorative banding and trim details on furniture, joinery, and interior fit-out; acting as a spacer, shim, or packer in mechanical and other contexts; and as general-purpose bar stock for cutting, drilling, and machining to custom components. The combination of light weight, corrosion resistance, and workability makes it a go-to material for trade fabricators, joiners, and shop-fitters.
Gooding Aluminium stocks aluminium flat bar, all at a consistent 3.2mm thickness: GA 0101 (9.5mm), GA 0103 (12.7mm), GA 0108 (15.8mm), GA 0114 (19.0mm), GA 0124 (25.4mm), GA 0132 (31.7mm), (GA 0141 38.1mm) GA 0157 (50.8mm), GA 0191 (76.2mm), and GA 0178 (101.6mm). This selection spans from narrow 9.5mm strip through to a broad 101.6mm bar, covering the most commonly specified widths for covering, reinforcing, and decorative trim applications.
All flat bar sizes in this range share a uniform wall thickness of 3.2mm. This is a standard thickness for general-purpose extruded flat bar — substantial enough to provide good rigidity and resistance to bending along the flat face, while remaining lightweight and easy to cut, drill, and work. For applications where a thinner strip or a heavier section is required, please contact the sales team to discuss alternative options.
All flat bar is extruded in grade 6063 aluminium alloy, to specifications BS EN 755, BS EN 515, and BS EN 573. Grade 6063 is the standard alloy for extruded profiles, combining a good surface finish with strong corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, and reliable suitability for anodising. It performs well in both interior and exterior environments and is straightforward to fabricate using standard metalworking methods.
All flat bar sizes are stocked in standard 4-metre lengths. If you require pieces shorter than 4 metres, Gooding Aluminium offers a cutting service — contact the sales team :sales@goodingalum.com for pricing and lead times on cut-to-length orders.
Yes. All flat bar sizes are available in either mill (untreated) finish or natural anodised finish. Natural anodised flat bar carries the 'S' suffix on its product code. Anodising is carried out to BS EN ISO 7599 and produces a hard, uniform surface that is more resistant to marking and corrosion than mill finish. Please note that shade variation can occur between anodised batches, and jig or clamp marks up to 50mm from each end are normal on anodised items and should be cut away before fixing where appearance is important.
Mill finish (untreated) is the better choice when the flat bar will be welded, painted, or powder coated as part of the finished assembly, or when it will be concealed from view entirely. Natural anodised finish is the right choice when the flat bar will be visible in the final installation and a clean, consistent aluminium appearance is required — for example as a decorative cover strip, exposed trim, or facing element in joinery and interior fit-out work.
Yes. A cutting service is available on all flat bar sizes. Contact the sales team at sales@goodingalum.com with your required lengths and quantities for a quote and lead time. Powder coating to any colour within the Classic RAL Colour Management System is also available on request for mill finish items.
Yes. Grade 6063 aluminium has excellent weldability and is compatible with standard MIG and TIG welding processes, making it well suited for use in fabricated welded assemblies. If sections are to be anodised after welding, consult your anodising supplier in advance as weld zones may react differently to the surrounding parent material.
Yes. Grade 6063 aluminium has good natural corrosion resistance and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. For external applications where long-term surface appearance matters, natural anodised finish provides better protection than mill finish. Powder coating is also available for enhanced weather resistance or specific colour requirements.
Aluminium flat bar is one of the most adaptable profiles in the standard extrusion range. Its simple rectangular cross section makes it immediately useful across a remarkably wide range of tasks: capping and covering the exposed edges of boards and sheet panels; acting as a reinforcing strap or backing plate to stiffen a lightweight assembly; providing a clean, flat face for cover joints in interior fit-out and joinery; and supplying raw bar stock for drilling, cutting, and machining to bespoke components. The uniform 3.2mm wall thickness across all sizes means the profile has a good balance of rigidity and workability — stiff enough for covering work, light enough for fine trim details, and easy to cut cleanly with standard metalworking saws. Gooding Aluminium stocks all widths in grade 6063 alloy in both mill and natural anodised finish, allowing you to specify the correct surface for both functional and finish-critical applications from a single stock source.
One of the most common uses for aluminium flat bar is as a visible cover strip, facing element, or decorative band in joinery, shopfitting, display, and interior fit-out work. The flat, parallel faces of the bar create a consistent, clean edge line when applied over panel joints, frame members, or other elements, giving a polished, considered finish to work that might otherwise show a raw or unfinished edge. In natural anodised finish, aluminium flat bar has a refined matt metallic appearance that complements both contemporary and traditional interior schemes. The range of widths means it is straightforward to match the bar to the element being covered — narrow widths for fine trim details, wider bars for more prominent covering and facing applications. For colour-matched installations, powder coating to any RAL colour is available on request on mill finish items.
Beyond trim and covering applications, aluminium flat bar is a practical material in its own right. The 3.2mm wall section provides sufficient stiffness for use as a fixing plate, backing strap, bracket element, or spacer in fabricated assemblies. Grade 6063 aluminium’s excellent weldability means flat bar can be integrated into welded structures without difficulty, and its good machinability makes it straightforward to drill, countersink, and tap for mechanical fixing applications. Customers fabricating display stands, light framing systems, bespoke furniture components, and custom joinery details regularly use flat bar from this range as a versatile stock material that can be cut and worked with standard tools on site or in the workshop.
