Aluminium Y-Shape Profiles & Y-Section Trims

Aluminium Y-shape profiles — sometimes called Y-section trims, Y-bar profiles, or three-way dividing trims — are specialist extrusions designed to receive a panel edge in the channel at the head of the Y, while the stem of the profile fixes to a surface or is concealed within a structure. The distinctive Y-shaped cross section makes them well suited to situations where a panel needs to be retained at a set position against a background surface, or where a dividing trim is required that can hold a panel edge and also provide a clean visual break against a flat backing. They are used in partition systems, display and exhibition walls, shopfitting, interior fit-out, and panel-fixing applications where the profile needs to do more than a standard channel or H-section can achieve.

Gooding Aluminium stocks Y-shape profiles in four gap sizes: 7.0mm (GA 1019), 9.5mm (GA 1020), 20.0mm (GA 1023), and 26.0mm (GA 1022). The gap size refers to the channel opening at the head of the Y that receives the panel edge. Select the gap size that matches the thickness of your panel or sheet material, allowing for manufacturer's tolerances.

Both H-shape and Y-shape profiles are designed to receive panel edges within a channel gap, but they serve different installation scenarios. An H-shape has two opposing channels that join two separate panels edge to edge in a straight line — it works as a joiner between panels. A Y-shape has a single channel at its head and a stem that extends outward, making it more suited to situations where a panel edge needs to be received and held while the profile itself is fixed to a backing surface or structure. The Y-shape is the right choice when you need a panel edge trim that also provides a positive fixing or standing position against a wall, board, or subframe.

All Y-shape profiles are extruded in grade 6063 aluminium alloy, to specifications BS EN 755, BS EN 515, and BS EN 573. Grade 6063 is the standard alloy for extruded profiles, offering a good surface finish, strong corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, and reliable suitability for anodising. It performs well in both interior and exterior environments.

Yes. All four Y-shape gap sizes are available in either mill (untreated) finish or natural anodised finish. Natural anodised profiles carry the 'S' suffix on their product code. Anodising is carried out to BS EN ISO 7599 and provides a harder, more uniform surface that is more resistant to marking and corrosion. Please note that shade variation can occur between anodised batches due to the reactive nature of the process, and jig or clamp marks up to 50mm from each end are normal on anodised items and should be cut away before fixing where appearance is important.

Mill finish (untreated) is aluminium in its extruded state with no surface treatment. It is the the better choice when the profile will be painted, powder coated, or concealed in the final installation. Natural anodised finish builds a hard, transparent oxide layer into the surface, producing a clean, uniform matt silver appearance with improved resistance to marking and corrosion. Anodised Y-shape profiles are better suited to visible installations where the aluminium surface will be on show in the finished work.

Yes. Grade 6063 aluminium has good natural corrosion resistance and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. For external applications where surface appearance needs to be maintained over time, natural anodised finish provides better protection than mill finish. Powder coating is also available for additional weather resistance or colour matching.
