The GA 1017 is an aluminium general-purpose trim with a 20.0mm single-slot gap — the widest-gap edge trim in GA’s miscellaneous channel range and the specification for structural-gauge board materials. This is a single-slot edge cap: it slides onto one board or panel edge, capping the raw face with a continuous aluminium trim that protects the material and gives the edge a finished metal appearance. At 20mm, it handles the heavy-duty board thicknesses used in structural fit-out, manufacturing, and workshop construction — not the light-gauge display and cabinetry materials suited to the narrower profiles in the range.
The 20.0mm gap accommodates 18mm and 19mm materials: standard structural plywood and MDF, thicker composite panels, worktop substrates, and engineered board used in counters, workbenches, and heavy-duty joinery. The wider face of the trim that results from this greater gap also provides a more substantial edge contact area — relevant when the panel edge is subject to mechanical loads, regular impact, or is in a position where a more prominent edge detail is appropriate.
Manufactured from grade 6063 aluminium alloy to BS EN 755, 515, and 573 standards. Available from stock in mill (untreated) or natural anodised finish in 4-metre lengths. Powder coat and cut lengths available to order.
N.B. Jig marks, up to 50mm in from each end (often less than this), can be apparent on anodised items. These marks can be cut away before fixing.
Shade variations can occur with anodised surfaces due to the reactive nature of this finishing process.

Processing Services: Cutting to length (straight and mitre), hole drilling, rolling and curving — contact Sales Team
Finish Notes: Anodised product codes carry an ‘s’ suffix. Jig marks within 50mm of each end are standard and can be trimmed during final fitting. Shade variations may occur between batches.
Surface Marking Test: Independent testing (Ceram / Lucideon): anodised surface achieved 4× greater abrasion resistance than mill finish
Sized for Structural Board — 18mm MDF and Plywood: 18mm MDF and structural plywood are the go-to board thicknesses when panels need to carry mechanical loads, span between supports, or resist impact in demanding environments. The GA 1017’s 20mm gap is matched to these materials, providing a 2mm working tolerance that accommodates the slight variation in thickness that occurs across structural board batches, while keeping the trim snug on the panel edge.
Wider Flange Contact Area for Greater Edge Protection: The wider the gap, the wider the profile’s flange face — and the more surface contact the trim has with the board edge. For 18mm board subject to mechanical loads, trolley impact, or forklift incursion in industrial environments, the GA 1017’s broader contact face distributes these forces across more of the panel edge, reducing the likelihood of the trim being displaced or the board edge splitting under impact.
Protects Structural Boards from Moisture at the Edge Face: Raw structural MDF and plywood edges are highly absorbent. In damp environments — commercial kitchens, warehouses, covered outdoor areas — moisture ingress through an unprotected board edge causes swelling, delamination, and structural failure over time. The GA 1017 seals the edge with a non-porous aluminium cap that prevents this, extending the service life of structural board installations in conditions where the board face would otherwise be adequately protected but the edge would not.
Independent Test Data Supports Anodised Finish Choice: For the GA 1017 in heavy-duty or industrial settings, the anodised finish option carries specific, documented performance benefits. Ceram Building Technology (now Lucideon) tested anodised aluminium extrusion surfaces under abrasive conditions and found they withstand up to four times as many passes before visible marking compared with mill finish. In workshop, warehouse, and manufacturing environments where the trim edge is regularly contacted by equipment, materials, and personnel, this difference in surface hardness is practically relevant.
Mill Finish the Right Call for Fabrication and Welded Assemblies: Where the GA 1017 is being used as a component in a welded or fabricated assembly, the mill (untreated) finish is the appropriate specification. Mill finish aluminium welds and bonds cleanly, and presents a consistent surface for subsequent powder coating or painting, if an applied finish is specified for the completed fabrication. For structural applications where the trim will be incorporated into a larger assembly rather than left as a standalone edge detail, mill finish is the practical choice.
Workbench Tops, Counters & Workshop Surfaces: 18mm plywood and MDF are the standard substrate for workbench tops, production line surfaces, laboratory benches, and commercial counters. These surfaces have exposed front and end edges that receive daily impact from tools, equipment, and materials. The GA 1017 provides the edge cap that protects these high-risk edges from splitting, chipping, and moisture ingress, while presenting a clean metal edge line.
Warehouse Shelving & Racking Panel Edges: Heavy-duty shelving systems and storage racking built from 18mm board have exposed shelf edges at a consistent height — in the direct path of goods being moved by hand, pallet truck, or forklift. The GA 1017 provides the edge protection needed to prevent these edges from being knocked, split, or delaminated by routine material handling, and the aluminium construction means the trim itself will not corrode in the humid or variable-temperature conditions typical of warehouse storage.
Structural Joinery & Bespoke Cabinetry Edge Treatment: For bespoke joinery work where structural plywood or thick MDF is used as the carcass material and the piece will be used in a demanding setting — a commercial kitchen, a contract-specification hotel room, a built-in storage installation in a public building — the GA 1017 provides the structural board edge with a metal trim that is more durable and more visually robust than edge banding or painted edge filler.
Manufacturing Jigs, Templates & Production Tooling: In manufacturing and engineering environments, 18mm board is commonly used for production jigs, routing templates, press platens, and assembly fixtures. These items have multiple exposed edges that are handled repeatedly and subject to mechanical stress from the production process. The GA 1017 protects these edges from damage that would compromise the accuracy of the jig or template, extending the working life of tooling that would otherwise need to be replaced when edge damage makes it dimensionally unreliable.
