Description

The GA 1209 is an aluminium Z-section general purpose trim with an 11mm inside step width (I/S Width). The Z cross-section creates an intentional offset between two opposing flanges: one flange fixes to or bears against a structure at one surface level, the connecting web provides the step, and the other flange sits against a face or panel at a level 11mm away. This deliberate stepped geometry makes the Z-section the right profile wherever two parallel surfaces at different levels need to be joined, covered, or transitioned by a single continuous trim.

At 11mm, the GA 1209 provides a noticeably deeper step than the GA 1208, which extends its usefulness to standard boarding thicknesses (9–10mm plywood and MDF are common in bead-and-frame constructions), thicker panel overlap joints, and transition details where the offset between adjacent surface faces is more pronounced. The additional step depth also provides more bearing surface on the far flange, which improves stability in panel retention applications compared with the narrower GA 1208.

Available from stock in mill (untreated) or natural anodised finish in 4-metre lengths. We can also Powder coat and cut lengths to suit your order requirements.

N.B. Jig marks, up to 50mm in from each end (often less than this), can be apparent on anodised items. These marks can be cut away before fixing.

Shade variations can occur with anodised surfaces due to the reactive nature of this finishing process.

Product Code:  GA 1209 (Mill) / GA 1209s (Natural Anodised)

I/S Width (Step Width):  11mm

Profile Function:  Stepped offset Z-section: creates a controlled step between two parallel planes; one flange at the near plane, web bridges the offset, opposing flange at the far plane (11mm set back)

Typical Step Range:  Suited to panel retention beads, standard boarding overlaps, and surface transitions with an offset of approximately 9–11mm — refer to the dimensional drawing for precise flange dimensions and tolerances

Profile Category:  Aluminium Z-Section — Stepped Offset Trim

Material:  Grade 6063 Aluminium Alloy

Standards:  BS EN 755, BS EN 515, BS EN 573

Anodising Standard:  BS EN ISO 7599

Powder Coating Standard:  BS 6496 (1984) — available to order, please contact Sales

Length:  4 metres (4000mm) standard stock length

Available Finishes:  Mill (Untreated) or Natural Anodised

Finish Notes:  Anodised product codes carry an ‘s’ suffix (e.g. GA 1208s). Jig marks within 50mm of each end are standard and can be trimmed during final fitting. Shade variations may occur between batches.

Surface Marking Test:  Independent testing (Ceram / Lucideon): anodised surface achieved up to 4× greater abrasion resistance than mill finish

Deeper Step for Standard Panel Thicknesses and Rebate Depths: The 11mm step comfortably accommodates 9–10mm panel thicknesses in bead-and-frame and rebated-panel applications — a common construction approach in shopfitting, joinery, and furniture work where a panel sits in a rebated groove and is retained by a face-applied bead. The additional step depth over the GA 1208 provides the clearance needed for these standard panel gauges without the bead bearing hard against the panel face.

Greater Bearing Area on the Retaining Flange: Because the step is wider, the GA 1209’s opposing flange has more material behind the step compared with the GA 1208. This gives the retaining flange greater stability when used as a panel stop or bead in a framed construction — the flange sits flat and true against the panel face rather than deflecting or twisting when the panel is loaded or moved.

Provides a Clean Cover for More Pronounced Surface Offsets: Where two adjacent surface faces are offset by around 10–11mm — the result of different board thicknesses, different build-up depths, or a deliberate reveal in a panelled surface — the GA 1209 bridges the step and covers the transition with a continuous aluminium trim. The deeper step allows it to span these more substantial offsets cleanly, where the GA 1208’s narrower step would leave a gap at one flange.

Up to Four Times the Surface Marking Resistance in Anodised Finish: Where the GA 1209 is used as a retention bead or step trim in a commercial interior or shopfitting installation — positions where the profile may be regularly touched, brushed against, or cleaned — the anodised finish provides a documented performance advantage. Independent testing by Ceram Building Technology (now Lucideon) confirmed the anodised aluminium surface withstands up to four times as many abrasion passes as mill finish before visible damage occurs.

Mill Finish the Practical Choice for Fabrication and Welded Assemblies: When the GA 1209 is incorporated into a fabricated assembly that will be welded, powder coated, or painted as part of a larger piece, mill finish is the appropriate specification. Mill finish aluminium welds cleanly, bonds well with adhesives, and accepts powder coating.

Panel Retention Beads in Framed Shopfitting & Joinery: In framed shopfitting units — counter fronts, display case frames, wall unit door frames — a panel is retained in a rebate by a face-applied bead. The GA 1209 suits this application for panels in the 9–10mm range: one flange bears against the rebate shoulder in the frame, the web bridges the panel thickness, and the other flange overlaps the panel face. The result is a clean, removable panel retention bead that can be unclipped or unscrewed to allow panel replacement.

Overlap Joints in Standard Boarding Systems: In lap-jointed boarding systems where adjacent boards or panels are offset by approximately 10–11mm at each joint — such as external weatherboarding-style cladding under a covered structure, or staggered-face boarding for visual effect — the GA 1209 provides the aluminium step trim that connects adjacent board faces cleanly at each lap joint, holding the overlap and finishing the visible joint line with a consistent metal detail.

Step Transition Covers Between Different Build-Up Depths: Commercial interiors often combine surfaces built to different depths — a standard plasterboard wall next to an acoustic-insulated wall, or a tiled area next to a painted surface, resulting in face planes at different levels. The GA 1209 covers the step between these surfaces with a continuous aluminium trim that bridges the 10–11mm offset, producing a clean transition without filler, sealant, or a bespoke fabricated piece at the step.

Window Bead & Panel Stop for Heavier-Gauge Panels: Window openings and door frames fitted with a non-standard panel — a decorative infill panel, a solid back panel in a display case, or a performance-grade board in a fire-rated or acoustic door frame — need a stop/bead profile that retains the panel against the frame. For panels in the 9–10mm range, the GA 1209’s 11mm step provides the working tolerance needed to bear against the rebate and overlap the panel face without the bead being too tight to install or remove the panel.
